The comparison to Thailand is apt. It's no coincidence that they had coups in 2006. On the same weekend, Thailand fell into further political disarray and the Commander has taken steps to ensure the same does not happen to Fiji.

LF, in last week's FT, Viliame Gavoka made comparison to India. He didn't make the right comparison. If he looked closely, he would see that we are more like Pakistan in that our political parties have not moved beyond old feudal ties.

This is what prevents our democracy from maturing and being more capable at resolving differences.

It seems the very defintion of democracy is being examined, gauged and measured by differing standards. It begs the question, if the International Standards Organization(ISO) even has a description or basic datum on democracy.
